Geography

The archipelago is located in the southern Cyclades, approximately 200 km southeast of mainland Greece. The main island features a crescent-shaped caldera, the remnant of the ancient volcanic island, which is now filled with seawater and includes two smaller volcanic islands. The interior caldera walls are steep and largely impassable, with settlements often built along the rim.

Getting there

Arrival is typically by air at Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR), with regular flights from Athens and seasonal direct flights from European cities, or by ferry from Piraeus (Athens) or Heraklion (Crete). Ferries include standard vessels taking 7-9 hours and high-speed catamarans taking 4-5 hours.

Getting around

Public transport is primarily via a bus network connecting various points on the island, centered around Fira. Boat services operate between coastal towns and smaller islands within the caldera. Rental of cars, scooters, and ATVs is also available, though road conditions and driving practices require attention.

When to go

The shoulder seasons of April-June and September-October offer milder temperatures suitable for outdoor activities and hiking, with fewer crowds than the peak summer months. Summers are extremely hot with a high UV index, leading to reduced public activity during midday.

Practical notes

Due to high UV exposure, especially in summer, sun protection is advised. Driving conditions can be challenging due to narrow roads and varying driver behaviors. Public buses can become crowded in peak season, sometimes skipping stops if full.
