Panama
April 2026Panama · City & Nature
Panama offers a compelling blend of tropical exploration and burgeoning luxury, ideal for the FatFIRE traveller seeking an off-the-beaten-path yet accessible escape. While not yet a saturated luxury destination, its private island resorts and developing urban centres provide an exclusive feel, particularly attractive to those favouring nature and adventure over hyper-developed tourist enclaves. It sits as a more accessible, yet still adventurous, alternative to destinations like Costa Rica, offering a distinct cultural flavour.
Panama is emerging as a destination of interest for its unique blend of exclusive island retreats and vibrant urban nightlife, appealing to those seeking both adventure and accessibility. The San Blas Islands and private island resorts are consistently highlighted as true 'hidden fat gems' offering an off-the-grid experience. While luxury accommodation is still developing, its proximity to major US hubs and Spanish-speaking heritage enhance its appeal.

Its convenience for US travellers, combined with a developing vibrant nightlife, makes it a strong contender for shorter trips or as part of a multi-country itinerary.
The value equation right now
Panama offers distinct value for travellers seeking exclusivity without the premium price tag of more established luxury destinations. Private island resorts like Islas Secas are positioned as 'true hidden fat gems,' suggesting a high value-to-experience ratio. The convenience of direct flights from major US cities further adds to its value proposition for those with limited time. While luxury hotel options are not as widespread as in other regions, the emerging high-end properties and unique local experiences justify the trip.

Insider tips from the community
For those seeking unique experiences, consider exploring the San Blas Islands, a region owned and operated by the Indigenous Guna Yala, offering a rustic, quiet, and exceptionally beautiful environment perfect for rowing between islands. Panama City boasts a vibrant nightlife scene with rooftop bars and pools, ideal for hopping between venues. For convenience and access to natural beauty, flying into Bocas del Toro from Panama City or even San Jose, Costa Rica, is straightforward, followed by a short boat transfer to island resorts. Travellers on extended trips might find local laundry services significantly more cost-effective than hotel options, with one report of a full wash and fold costing around $20 USD.
Best time to go
We just took a 1 hr flight from Panama City to Bocas del Toro then they come pick you up from the airport to take you to the boat which is a lovely 20 min ride from there to the island. But if you are tagging it into a Costa Rica trip there are flights from SJO directly to BOC.
